Policies & Rates

The SDSC/Calit2 Synthesis Center may be reserved for presentations, meetings, and workshops of up to 55 people for a nominal fee.

Usage policy

The Synthesis Center is open to on- and off-campus organizations whose activites are relevant to and advance the missions of SDSC and Calit2 in furthering research and education.  The center is not available for classroom use scheduled through the UC San Diego Registrar.

Our scheduling priorities:

  1. Events by and for UC San Diego personal affiliated with SDSC and/or Calit2.
  2. Events for projects and grants funded or administered by SDSC and/or Calit2.
  3. Events closely related to the center's focus on fostering science collaboration and education.
  4. Events that take advantage of the unique technical abilities of the center.

The center's Director and their delegate have the responsibility and authority to approve the use of the facility, including any exceptions to these policies.

Event advertising

Please state the event's location as at "The SDSC/Calit2 Synthesis Center at Atkinson Hall."

Events should not be advertised as as sponsored by SDSC or Calit2 without prior approval by the Director or their delegate.

Rates

Use of the center is subject to a charge or recharge based upon rates approved by General Accounting of the Business and Financial Services, UC San Diego.  The fee covers:

  • Use of the meeting space.
  • Use of the associated audio, video, network, and computing equipment.
  • Setup and tear-down for tables and chairs.
  • Support during the event from one technical staff member.

On-campus groups must provide a recharge index number when reserving the center.  Off-campus groups will be billed.

The minimum use time is one half-day.  Events longer than two days receive a 15% discount (shown above) starting on the 3rd day.  This discount is not available for weekends or holidays.

The center's special equipment requires that a staff member be present for their setup and operation (included in the rates above).  Some events may require an additional staff member (for an additional fee) if they require:

  • Multiple concurrent screen displays
  • Use of the center's computers (instead of presenter laptops)
  • Custom use of the equipment
  • Extra hours beyond normal work day times.
